An attractive piece that looks like it was carved to display the 3.5-cm-across fluorite ball atop, like a work of art. This specimen is an unusually elegant and complete example of the spherical, uncrystallized fluorite "balls" which are such puzzling shapes. And why they form here, and almost nowhere else in the world despite hundreds of other fluorite locales, is still a puzzle. Complete all around, 360 degrees, the ball is translucent and glows a golden amber color when backlit. Joe Budd photos.
