On a stark white marble matrix is perched a large (2 x 1 centimeters), translucent, pretty lavender-pink crystal of corundum - call it ruby or sapphire, as you will, though the "proper" thing would be to call it sapphire as it leans more to lavender than deep pink or red. At any rate, it is complete all the way around, with fine sharp faces, and is beautifully exposed on the matrix from all sides. A very striking and impressive corundum specimen.
