A sharp, lustrous, deep green uvarovite garnet crystal with emerald-green highlights from the famous Outokumpu mine of Finland. This is something out of the old European mineralogy books, rarely seen today in quality and in this size! This partially gemmy crystal has textbook dodecahedral form, great luster and gorgeous, deep green color for which this garnet species is characteristic. Uvarovite is the calcium chromium member of the Garnet group and this choice crystal has strikingly sharp edges and faces. Most from here are rolled, especially as they are old, and have been around in drawers and collections for so many years. The dodecahedral faces constitute perfect diamond shapes. This uvarovite is classic, old-time material from this renowned Cu-Co-Zn-Ni deposit. Mass is 5.8 grams. From the well-known display garnet collection of Bill Larson (owner of the Himalaya mine). In their mineral shop, The Collector in Fallbrook, CA, they had his personal collection of garnets (built since the 1970s) on display for decades, until it was sold to me around 2012. This is from that display collection, and comes with the custom base that was used at the time.
