Baryte on Calcite
Lustrous, prismatic, root beer-brown Baryte crystals to 5.5cm on a matrix of yellow Calcite crystals are a classic combination from the big septarian concretions of Elk Creek in Meade County, South Dakota! These are such contrasting pieces with satin lustered, yellow Calcite rhombs lining the limestone concretion matrix and forming a backdrop for the lustrous, golden brown, doubly-terminated Baryte crystals. The Baryte is largely two crystals in parallel growth with numerous, smaller, flanking crystals also in parallel growth. The large crystals are very transparent and gemmy at their terminations. One Baryte crystal actually grows into the Calcite crystal matrix. It displays beautifully on its own, sitting up perfectly! The color , balance, and quality of this piece make it really stand out in a crowd.
