In 2004, Finland surprised the mineral world by giving up a stunning and large single pocket of heliodor crystals from a large economic pegmatite mine by the legendary mineral collector/explorer, Peter Lyckberg (also a polymath who speaks a dozen languages and actually goes to these crazy places). Peter collected the pocket and specimens such as this came out through exchange, in this case a trade for Himalaya Mine tourmaline to mine owner Bill Larson in the mid-2000s. This is typical of the material, and shows a now-classic patterning and color combination. In shape, it is a very unusual shape like a volcano, rather than the usual hexagonal form, due to solution effects that deformed and reshaped the crystals after they first formed. This material remains rare on the market today, nearly 20 years later. From the beryl collection of Bill Larson and Pala Intl, long on display in their company store as both a private collection and an educational resource. 69 grams. Ex.
