Simply stunning rainbow iridescent chalcopyrite. The Baisha Copper Mine in China has produced some of the most colorful and most intense iridescent chalcopyrite compared to any worldwide locality. The purples, blues and yellows are very intense and form concentric, irregular rings of color on every surface of this specimen! The chalcopyrite is composed of hundreds of small (<0.2-2mm), highly intergrown crystals that form a nearly complete coating on the piece of matrix. There are some isolated crystals and small clusters of translucent, off-white calcite locally. A beautiful display piece that comes with an engraved base. Although this is a coating of flattened crystals, and not the kind of usual three-dimensional chalcopyrite crystal I might otherwise try to buy and sell, and which you might expect based on other localities, that makes it all the more unique. Found in 2017.
