Excellent, pillow-shaped Vesuvianite from Hubei Province in China. This exceptionally large single crystal has superb luster, is translucent to gemmy, and has a rich, sparkly root beer color. The corners are intriguingly modified, and the the one contact and little bit of edge wear do not really detract from the overall appearance or quality. The aesthetics are good, and it is much better in person. These are very very rare and this is one of the best I have seen! The best ones for luster and color seem to have come out in the late 1990s, and I have seen only a trickle of inferior specimens since.
