Garnets from this locale seldom come out as isolated crystals on nice matrix plates! However, that is what we have here, with golf ball-like gem garnets perched smartly against dark matrix, and with great isolation on the larger crystal in particular! The major crystals, which reach 2 cm, are literally like "jeweled golf balls" in form. The quality on the piece, overall, is just through the roof. This is actually part of a famous large specimen called the "dinner plate" from the collection of longtime chief mine geologist at this important industrial locality, Francesco Spertini. When I got the piece, which was very large, I took the risk of trimming this portion of the specimen away from the major block of matrix, because there was a big empty gap and a little damage in-between the parts of the single piece. It improved both pieces, as a result. The major portion of the specimen has the same style, just bigger overall (and was priced necessarily) ... and in any case, this is a full sized small cab, perfect in size for any collection.
