Pyromorphite var. Arsenian
This is a stunning, large Arsenian Pyromorphite of the best orange color from the Bunker Hill mine in Idaho, which are also the best orange pyromorphite in the world from anywhere. The piece comprises dozens of curving crystals that are so typical for this variety of Pyromorphite from this locality. The moderately intergrown spheres of glistening Pyromorphite, to 2 cm, are stacked one upon the other in a very three-dimensional group that has such a high luster it looks continually wet! Two-thirds of the specimen is dominated by bright orange Arsenian Pyromorphite spheres and then one side has a variegated mix of largely yellow-orange colored secondary dusting with some orange ones peaking through for contrast. Most of the orange spheres are slightly translucent which makes them glow with color when well lit. This piece is really an artful combination of color and texture. The arsenic substitution into the growing crystal changes the structure and therefore the habit as well as the color, thus producing these stunning radial clusters. An old and important piece from the single important find of this material. Formerly on exhibition and loan to the Zhejiang Museum, Hangzhou, so it comes with the Chinese museum label. These are few and far between in this size and perfection.
