This is one of the most remarkable tremolite specimens we have ever seen! New York tremolites are unique in all the world, and historic as well. A single, magnificent, 13.9 x 2.7 x 1 cm, translucent to locally transparent, deep lavender tremolite (var Hexagonite) crystal displays prominently on an attractive, starkly contrasting matrix of fine-grained, crystalline, pale lavender tremolite schist. The name hexagonite is given to the purple variety of this mineral and the Gouveneur Talc Company mine in New York is the premier locality in the world for this tremolite variety (from finds in the 1800's). The large crystal has one clean repair. A phenomenal piece for any collector, USA, rares, color, or otherwise - this is just a unique specimen worthy of any collection! Ex. Charlie Key collection to me in 2008 when Marshall Sussman and I bought his main collection including his USA classics. Since then, after residing 8 years in a private collection and being sold back to me recently, I personally had the large matrix specimen this once was sent to the lab and exposed the flat laying crystal to stand vertically, and free, as you see here. We do not know of a comparable USA specimen. The first photo here shows moderate backlighting only and this is a highly displayable cabinet specimen of some importance.
