A very significant zircon, on a matrix of calcite from a carbonatite occurrence. This is one of the finest examples, and the finest large example, I have seen of this material. Matrix pieces are rarely encountered from this locality. Most specimens were found in alluvial deposits, while this was collected directly from a quarry and thus has no "rolling" damage. There is admittedly a nearly invisible repair halfway down the crystal, over the matrix, but I consider this acceptable in a specimen of this magnitude. The zircon measures 11-cm long, is euhedral and is very lustrous. Both terminations are present.
