As with many specimens in the collection, this is a superb example of one of the great classics, for both collectors and academics alike. Epidotes from Austria were one of the must haves of the era of the birth of mineralogy, and all old museums have these in larger sizes. However, what you seldom see are competition-worthy THUMBNAIL sized examples for the modern collector of aesthetics and style. Many small pieces are simply that: small pieces, without style. This is a gem, quite literally. I am embarrassed to admit that I had it grouped with the thumbnail azurite suite because of its sharp shape and luster, until we went to do the photos and realized it was gemmy and olive-green around the edges under strong lighting.
