The original, large scalenohedral crystals of calcite are now completely gone, etched away by corrosive solutions in the pocket, while the orangey covering quartz retains their sharp shape. If you flip this specimen over, or look through the missing tip of one of the pseudormorphs, you can see that the specimen is hollow inside. To make it even more interesting, a later generation of calcite crystals has formed on the outside of the quartz - so it is calcite, on quartz, on now-missing calcite. Ex. Richard Hauck Collection.
