Glowing crystals of purple fluorite ring a rich mass of crystallized sphalerite, the zinc ore that was the focus of mining at the Elmwood for decades before it closed maybe 5 years ago. The fluorites measure to 1.7 cm along the edge. You can see how the deep coffee-colored sphalerite has formed large euhedral forms on the surface of which are hundreds of small, complex sub-crystals.
