This is a most unusual rhodochrosite habit, for the mine and the species. The piece features crystallized, translucent rhodochrosite in individual crystals that are truly ball-shaped, at first glance. Up close, you can see they are indeed crystallized, with tsplayed, rounded terminations composed of many microtermination facets like the tips of wheat in a close-cropped bundle.
