Since the discovery, in 1865, of epidote from Knappenwand, the locality has been ranked as producing the finest specimens on a worldwide basis. This aesthetic cluster shows why: The largest crystal measures 7 cm in length, and it and all the smaller crystals attached, many of which are doubly terminated, exhibit BRILLIANT luster and very good translucence. All the crystals are accented with a greenish nest of "byssolite" needles, a form of actinolite. An old, probably late 19th-century label, is attached with the name Dr.Th.Scheerer (1813-1875, according to Obodda's research). Ex Obodda Collection.
