This is an old classic combination piece, from this famous district. Calcite grew in several habits upon the amethyst, and then itself was coated with a thin, sparkly layer of quartz on top. Overall a very beautiful, three-dimensional combination piece, and complete all around. This is an old piece from the Philadelphia Academy of Sciences collection. Joe Budd photos.
