Specimen Overview

Natural Shangaan Amethyst from the Chibuku Mine, Chiredzi District, Masvingo Province, Zimbabwe. A well-formed scepter quartz with a slender earlier-generation stem and a distinctly enlarged amethyst crown.

The specimen displays a clear internal pyramid-shaped phantom, together with natural reddish iron-bearing inclusions commonly described as hematite inclusions. The combination of scepter morphology, phantom growth, violet amethyst, and inclusions gives the crystal considerable internal depth and visual complexity.

Locality

Chibuku Mine is well known for quartz scepters, amethyst, smoky quartz, phantom growth, and iron-bearing inclusions. “Shangaan Amethyst” is the established trade name commonly associated with amethyst from this region and the local Shangaan people.

Scepter Formation

The scepter structure records multiple stages of quartz growth. An earlier crystal formed the narrow stem, followed by later quartz growth concentrated around the termination, creating the characteristic crown-like head.

The scepter form is naturally developed and remains clearly recognizable, with good overall proportions.

Pyramid Phantom

A distinct pyramidal phantom is visible within the crystal, preserving an earlier stage of quartz growth enclosed by later quartz. Its appearance changes with viewing angle and illumination, revealing the internal growth history of the specimen.

Hematite Inclusions

Natural reddish to copper-toned iron-bearing inclusions occur within the quartz. Against the violet amethyst, these inclusions create strong internal contrast and become particularly noticeable under directional light.

Amethyst & Transparency

The crown shows a rich natural violet color with transparent to translucent areas. Light passing through the crystal reveals layered growth, the internal phantom, and the depth created by the inclusions.
