Unusual specimen for the species, lustrous crystallized witherite across the top of matrix. This is in terrific condition.The Kremikovtsi deposit, located near Sofia in Bulgaria, is a major sedimentary-hydrothermal ore occurrence discovered in 1955 and heavily exploited through an expansive open-pit mine to supply the country's flagship mid-century metallurgical complex. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within Triassic carbonate sequences that underwent complex faulting, multi-stage hydrothermal alteration, and supergene oxidation, producing a massive stratabound iron, barite, and base-metal ore body. Mineralogically, the mine is celebrated by collectors and researchers for its remarkable assemblages of secondary minerals, particularly fine baryte, siderite, fluorite, and various lead and copper species, alongside large iron-oxide masses. Historically, commercial extraction and its associated heavy industries formed a cornerstone of Bulgaria's socialist-era heavy industrialization from the late 1950s onward, before mining and industrial operations wound down and ceased around 2009.
