A massive siderite specimen hosting micaceous bright metallic hematite. Collected in 1996. Interesting association specimen.The Champion Mine, located in Marquette County within the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, is a historic underground iron mine that opened in the 1860s and operated intermittently into the 20th century. Geologically, the site is situated along the southern edge of the Marquette Iron Range, where Precambrian-aged sedimentary and volcanic sequences of the Paleoproterozoic Negaunee Iron Formation underwent intense regional metamorphism. This structural folding created deeply dipping, highly concentrated lenses of high-grade iron ore. Mineralogically, the deposit is dominated by massive and specular hematite, magnetite, and jaspilite, frequently accompanied by quartz, sericite, and accessory minerals embedded within the banded iron formations.
