Deep green lustrous crystals of epidote to 0.2 cm in size on matrix with light green crystallized prehnite and crystallized quartz. In good condition. The Iroquois Mine, situated near Seneca and Allouez in Keweenaw County, Michigan, is a historic site within the famous Northern Michigan copper mining district. Geologically, the area is defined by ancient Precambrian basaltic lava flows and interbedded sedimentary rocks formed during the Midcontinent Rift event over one billion years ago. Mineralogically, the location is known for deposits of native copper occurring within amygdaloidal flow tops and fissure veins, accompanied by secondary minerals such as calcite, quartz, and epidote. Historically, exploration and mining operations here began during the late 19th-century copper boom, as prospectors sought to extract profitable metal from the rugged Keweenaw terrain.
