Platy pink crystal groupings of rhodochrosite on a colorless crystallized quartz matrix. Good example for the species at this mining district. This is crystallized completely all around with no points of attachment.Madan is a historic mining town situated in the southern Rhodope Mountains of Bulgaria. Mining activity in the region dates back to antiquity, with lead and silver extraction beginning during the time of the Thracians and continuing through Roman and medieval periods. Modern industrial scale mining developed rapidly in the mid-twentieth century, turning the district into one of the world's most significant lead and zinc mining fields. Geologically, the area rests within a complex metamorphic and magmatic dome where older Precambrian schists and marbles are cut by extensive Cenozoic hydrothermal vein systems. This unique setting created massive quartz sulfide veins and carbonate replacement bodies rich in galena, sphalerite, and pyrite, alongside exceptional mineral vugs that have made Madan world famous among mineral collectors for its pristine, large crystal specimens.
