Sharp pseudo-hexagonal crystals of pyrrhotite measuring to almost 3.0 cm in size on a crystallized quartz matrix. The pyrrhotite crystals are now replaced by crystallized pyrite. In great condition.Trepca, located in northern Kosovo near Mitrovica, is one of the most famous mining districts in Europe, with a rich history dating back to Roman times and extensive commercial exploitation by Saxon miners in the Middle Ages. Geologically, the deposit is situated within the Vardar tectonic zone and consists of complex skarn and hydrothermal replacement ore bodies formed by Tertiary magmatic activity interacting with carbonate rocks and schist. Mineralogically, the site is globally celebrated for producing exceptional specimens of sulfides and sulfosalts—including galena, sphalerite, and arsenopyrite—alongside a vast array of diverse secondary minerals, making it a legendary locality for both economic geology and mineral collecting.Pseudomorphs of pyrite after pyrrhotite form through a process called pyritization, where iron-rich sulfide minerals undergo chemical alteration. Historically, these specimens are found in hydrothermal veins and sedimentary ore deposits where changing chemical conditions, such as an increase in sulfur availability or shifts in oxidation states, cause pyrrhotite to become unstable. As the original iron sulfide gradually dissolves or reacts, pyrite takes its place molecule by molecule. This preserves the distinct hexagonal or tabular crystal shapes of the earlier pyrrhotite while completely transforming the internal mineralogy and composition into shiny brass-yellow pyrite cubes or aggregates.
