Bright lustrous crystals of galena to 2.0 cm in size on matrix with golden crystals of pyrite and minor quartz. In great condition, a beautiful combination piece.The South Petrovitsa Mine is part of the larger Petrovitsa deposit within the Madan ore field in the Smolyan province of the Rhodope Mountains in southern Bulgaria. Geologically, the deposit consists of hydrothermal lead-zinc vein and metasomatic replacement ore bodies hosted in Paleogene-faulted metamorphic rocks and marble lenses, associated with tertiary magmatic activity. Mineralogically, the mine is world-renowned for producing exceptional specimen-grade crystallized minerals, including galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, quartz, calcite, and rare secondary species like osakaite. While ancient Thracians and Romans extracted ores in the broader Madan region centuries ago, modern industrial-scale exploration and active mining in the Petrovitsa deposit commenced under state-backed operations in the mid-20th century (following World War II around the 1950s) and has continued under active commercial concessions focused on polymetallic extraction and fine mineral specimen recovery.
