Glassy gemmy colorless crystals of quartz very nice across the top of a crystallized lustrous galena matrix. In terrific condition. The Borieva Mine, situated within the Madan ore field of the Rhodope Mountains in the Smolyan Province of southern Bulgaria, is part of a historic mining district with roots dating back to ancient Thracian and Roman times. Archaeological discoveries in the old galleries of the mine include ancient coinage, pottery, and primitive mining tools. Modern industrial scale extraction developed through the 20th century under Bulgarian, German, and Soviet-Bulgarian operations to target valuable metal reserves. Geologically, the deposit is located within a Paleogene metamorphic core complex where extensional tectonics and magmatism drove hydrothermal activity. This environment formed significant vein-type and replacement ore bodies rich in lead and zinc, yielding world-famous crystallized specimens of galena, sphalerite, pyrite, quartz, and calcite.
