Attractive large combination piece with bright lustrous crystals of galena across a crystallized quartz matrix with black to iridescent crystallized sphalerite. In terrific condition. The Mogilata deposit, located within the Septemvri Mine of the Madan ore field in Smolyan, Bulgaria, has a long history of lead-zinc mining dating back to antiquity, with organized extraction spanning from Thracian and Roman times through to modern industrial operations. Geologically, the deposit is part of the Madan-Rhodope metallogenic province, characterized by hydrothermal vein and metasomatic ore bodies hosted in metamorphic rocks cut by Tertiary magmatic intrusions. The mineralizations consist primarily of galena, sphalerite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite housed within quartz-carbonate and skarn-like gangue assemblies, renowned worldwide for yielding exceptional crystal specimens.
