Spiky crystals of quartz measuring to 4.0 cm in size across the top of matrix with crystallized calcite. Minimal damage present, this still in good condition. Aesthetic and attractive. The Mogilata deposit, accessed via the Septemvri Mine within the Madan ore field of the Smolyan province in southern Bulgaria, is part of a historic mining district with roots stretching back to antiquity, though intensive modern industrial extraction began in the mid-20th century under state-directed operations. Geologically, the deposit is situated within the central Rhodope Mountains and consists of hydrothermal vein and metasomatic replacement orebodies. These formations are hosted in Precambrian to Paleozoic metamorphic rocks, specifically crystalline schists and marbles, cut by Tertiary magmatic activity. The interaction between mineralizing hydrothermal fluids and the carbonate host rocks created optimal conditions for cavity-filling mineralization, producing world-class specimens of lead and zinc sulfides alongside well-crystallized gangue minerals.
