Clintonite is a rare mica species that was first discovered near Amity, New York in 1828. It was then named in 1843 for DeWitt Clinton, a naturalist and politician who served as a United States Senator and was the sixth governor of New York. Some of the best examples of the species, both from the standpoint of crystal habit and color, are from the Crestmore Quarries in California. This piece features three chrome, blue-green books of pseudohexagonal Clintonite. The largest crystal is 1.8 cm across, and the three attached books, with their color, form, and super-high luster, display absolutely beautifully. This is complete on both sides, and is one of the finest examples we have seen that is also a full, competition worthy thumbnail specimen of a very rare (and American) species. A GREAT, representative specimen of a species that is not often seen in good crystallized examples. Collected by Al Rose, a well-known California field collection. To me, this is a stunning thumbnail specimen because of the shape, color, and the surprise of seeing a species we do not expect, in collectible quality.
