Woodwardite, a rare and unusual hydrated Cu-Al-sulfate secondary mineral found in the oxidized zone of copper deposits, is quite uncommon in aesthetic specimens such as this. Ranging from a thick to thin crust in shades that vary from baby blue to a deep azure blue, the Woodwardite is dramatic and aesthetic in and of itself. Where it contrasts with the almost gossan matrix, the appearance is even more stark and noteworthy with such differences in color and form. This cabinet-sized piece is from the significant, small 2018 Pocket found at Qinglong, and it represents a true rarity for a strange locality which has given us many unusual minerals and combinations. By comparison, the type locality for Woodwardite is in Cornwall, England, with specimens also coming from Italy, Greece and Arizona. This is really visually fascinating material, looking more organic than mineral. We were happy to be among the first to purchase this in China and bring it out in such quality.
