From the well-known Graves Mountain locality, this important and aesthetic museum-sized display specimen is a choice example of its famous Rutile crystals. They rank among best in the world, and certainly are unique compared to all other finds except perhaps a few smaller examples from an old mine in California. This piece has a glorious metallic centerpiece in contrasting matrix, presented nicely to the viewer. There are three classic Rutile crystals nicely and aesthetically embedded in a typical Hematite-colored matrix composed of Kyanite, Mica, and Quartz. The Rutiles have a mirror-like, metallic luster that is so reflective that you can actually read off of the faces! The largest of the three Rutiles is an impressive 6 cm across. The presentation side, as you can see, is excellent. Highly representative, and then some, for this great Rutile locality. There are unknown grains in the matrix that fluoresce orange. Ref: The Mineralogical Record, V 16, No 6, pp: 443-458. For those very familiar with the locality, we have a handwritten note from John that this was collected by Junior Norman in 2006 - from the E or NE wall of the main pit in the back of the notch - just below where Don Reems and Glenn Hay had stopped. John Whatley was the largest systematic collector of the southeast states, and lived and specialized in Georgia material. We purchased his collection in part for his core Georgia suite and the value in these Rutiles and his Amethysts.
