Beautiful pink rhombohedral crystals of rhodochrosite across a quartz crystal matrix. In super condition. Great color. The Batantsi Mine, part of the Varba-Batantsi concession within the broader Madan Ore Field of Smolyan Province, Bulgaria, is situated in the central Rhodope Mountains. Historically, the region has a long mining tradition reaching back to antiquity, though modern industrial underground extraction developed extensively during the twentieth century to recover lead and zinc. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within complex Precambrian metamorphic sequences, including gneisses, amphibolites, and marbles, which were folded during the Alpine orogeny and subsequently cut by Oligocene hydrothermal vein systems and structural fault zones. Where these mineralizing fluids intersected carbonate host rocks, they formed extensive replacement skarn zones. The deposit is well known among mineral collectors for producing quality specimens of quartz, galena, sphalerite, and carbonates, including notable rhodochrosite.
