A large thin crystal grouping of calcite 6.0 cm across coming off a quartz crystal matrix with calcite. This appears to be some kind of a pseudomorph. Unusual and very attractive. The Boldut Mine, situated in the Cavnic mining district of Maramures County in northern Romania, has a long history of metal extraction dating back to medieval and Roman times. Geologically, the deposit is part of the prolific Baia Mare metallogenic province, characterized by complex Neogene volcanic activity. Hydrothermal vein systems cut through volcanic and sedimentary rock sequences, yielding rich polymetallic orebodies containing lead, zinc, copper, gold, and silver. The underground workings are world-renowned among mineral collectors for producing exceptional specimens of sulfides and associated gangue minerals, including striking combinations of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, quartz, calcite, and dolomite.
