Light blue cubic crystals of fluorite averaging 0.5 cm in size on matrix with barite and galena. Some damage present. Classic material for the locality.The Blanchard Mines, located within the Hansonburg District in the northern portion of the Oscura Mountains in Socorro County, New Mexico, are situated along the western flank of the Sierra Oscura. The local geology features Pennsylvanian marine limestone, shale, and interbedded arkosic sandstone overlying Proterozoic basement granites and gneisses. Mineral deposits are concentrated primarily as open-space fillings in fissures, fault breccia, and solution cavities within the Council Springs limestone, formed as part of the Rio Grande Rift hydrothermal systems. Large-scale mining development began in the early 1900s to extract lead, though multiple commercial operations struggled for economic viability in the remote desert environment. Over subsequent decades, the mines became widely recognized among mineral collectors for producing vibrant blue fluorite, barite, galena, and rare secondary copper and lead minerals.
