Most of us know boracite, from 1990s finds in England, as small blue crystals in massive formations. However, the old classic from 1800s-era mineralogy books was from Germany, and showed as loose, geometric crystals such as you see here. This is a remarkable and equant dodecahedral crystal from the type locality! Classic seafoam-blue/green color (hard to convey in photos), good luster, and great form make this such a competitive-level thumbnail of a rare gem species! These are quite old and turn up now only in old collections. The cutting rough value of the specimen, because of the size and color, is considerable at around $1500 wholesale (we know this because I had to pay $1500 to my wholesale gem cutting friend who found it in an old collection, to keep from having him cut it into a rare gemstone for his own customer base - which he would have sold for more). In all my years of dealing since the early 1980s, I have seen and had only a handful of these, all from very old collections. They simply do not turn up very often.
