This is a special, sparkly specimen of high-quality old-African rhodochrosite that is a bit different from others: we see a lot of "small rhodos" from the old finds at N'Chwaning, circa 1980. However, they are generally skinny slender things. This is rather special, as it is a large, volume-filling single crystal of gem-quality transparent rhodochrosite. More than that, what makes it really "pop" as a competitive-level thumbnail specimen, is the thin association of tiny quartz crystals atop, which gives it a special sparkle that other styles of N'Chwaning rhodochrosite are lacking. It is just different, in a world where most NCH thumbnail rhodochrosites look the same. The sparkle, size, and impact all combine to elevate the piece. From the long-held private "gem crystal suite" of the collection of a dealer from the Golden Age years of mineral collecting, purchased at shows in the time they came out. 8.7 grams.
