A beautiful agatized limb cast.Agatized limb casts are pseudomorphs that form when volcanic ash or mud rapidly buries tree branches, sealing them in an oxygen-depleted environment. As the hot volcanic debris cools and hardens around the wood, the organic material slowly decomposes, leaving behind a hollow three-dimensional mold that perfectly preserves the external texture of the original bark and knots. Over thousands to millions of years, silica-rich groundwater percolates through the surrounding volcanic tuff and seeps into these cavities, gradually precipitating microcrystalline quartz, or chalcedony, to fill the voids. Historically, major geologic deposits like the Eocene-aged Clarno Formation in Oregon became famous during the mid-twentieth century rockhound boom, as erosion exposed these colorful, solid agate replicas of ancient forests to collectors.
