Colorless crystals of quartz across the top of matrix with minor pyrite. In good condition.Butte, Montana, lies on the edge of the Late Cretaceous Boulder Batholith, where a complex network of geological faults and hydrothermal activity created one of the most concentrated metal deposits on Earth. Circulating mineral-rich fluids deposited vast veins of copper, zinc, lead, silver, and gold within the host quartz monzonite approximately 74 million years ago. Mining began in the 1860s with gold placer operations, transitioning to silver, and ultimately booming in the 1880s as the demand for copper electrical wiring skyrocketed. Dubbed the "Richest Hill on Earth," Butte became a powerful industrial center dominated by the Anaconda Copper Mining Company. Over a century of intensive underground mining gave way to the Berkeley Pit open-pit operation in 1955, leaving a legacy of massive metal production alongside complex environmental and superfund reclamation challenges.
