An antique glass jar hosting massive pieces of colorless gemmy kieserite. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video and dates to the very early 20th century.The Niedersachsen potash mine, located in Wathlingen within the Celle district of Lower Saxony, Germany, is situated atop a massive salt dome formed by the evaporation of the ancient Zechstein Sea during the Permian period. Over millions of years, tectonic forces pushed these deeply buried, low-density salt layers upward through overlying sediment, forming a salt diapir rich in sodium and potassium-magnesium salts. Mining operations at the site began in the early twentieth century to extract these valuable minerals, primarily for agricultural fertilizers. The mine remained a major regional employer and producer for decades until economic shifts and the depletion of easily accessible potash reserves led to the cessation of active mining operations in the late twentieth century.Kieserite is a hydrous magnesium sulfate mineral that crystallizes in the monoclinic system. Typically colorless, gray, or yellowish, it occurs abundantly in marine evaporite deposits, often intergrown with halite and potassium salts like carnallite. Because of its high solubility and concentration of both magnesium and sulfur, kieserite is widely mined and processed for use in the global agricultural industry to correct soil nutrient deficiencies.
