Sparkling pink botryoidal rhodochrosite across the top of matrix with quartz. In good condition. The Santa Rita mine, situated within the historic Morococha district in the Yauli Province of Junin, Peru, is a prominent underground operation known for its complex polymetallic lead-zinc-copper-silver mineralization. Geologically, the deposit consists of intricate hydrothermal veins, mantos, and replacement bodies hosted within the Triassic-Jurassic Pucara Group limestones and the Permian Mitu Group volcanics, all structural components of a highly fractured anticline intruded by Miocene quartz diorite porphyries. These fluid pathways allowed for the deposition of rich base metal sulfides alongside an array of well-crystallized collector minerals, including notable specimens of rhodochrosite, quartz, and various sulfosalts. Organized industrial underground mining at the Santa Rita shaft accelerated in the early twentieth century under the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corporation, which systematically consolidated the district's silver-copper operations. The mine remained heavily active through mid-century transitions under the state-owned Centromin Peru, and following privatization in the late 1990s, the property was absorbed into larger regional mining groups like Pan American Silver, with modernized underground extraction and localized specimen recovery continuing well into the 2020s.
