Somewhat unusual color for the species, a loose attractive translucent crystal of orange kyanite. In great condition.The Nani Hill deposit, located near Loliondo in the Ngorongoro District of the Arusha Region, Tanzania, is a mineral locality notable for producing vibrant, well-crystallized orange spessartine garnets and unusual orange kyanite crystals. Geologically, the site is situated within the Neoproterozoic Mozambique Belt, a metamorphic terrain characterized by high-grade pelitic schists, gneisses, and complex pegmatites. The highly prized, bright orange spessartine and rare orange kyanite crystals formed within late-stage, manganese-rich pegmatitic veins and associated quartz dikes that crosscut the regional metamorphic host rocks, where trace amounts of manganese in the hydrothermal system colored both mineral species. Small-scale mining and specimen extraction at the locality began in late 2007 following an accidental surface discovery by local Maasai pastoralists, sparking a significant gem rush that peaked between 2008 and 2010. While mechanized activity was minimal, hundreds of local artisanal miners worked open trenches and shallow pits during this period, with intermittent, localized hand-mining continuing to supply the international specimen market on a smaller scale into the 2020s.
