A grouping of glassy green cubic fluorite crystals, these mostly transparent with interesting inclusions. Minimal cleaving present, this still in good condition.
The Hunan Province of China is a globally dominant fluorite-producing region, famous for yielding world-class, multi-colored cubic and octahedral crystal groups prized by collectors. Geologically, the deposits are primarily hosted within Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, particularly limestones, that were heavily fractured and altered by Mesozoic tectonic and magmatic events associated with the Yanshanian orogeny. High-temperature hydrothermal fluids cooling within these structural faults and karstic cavities deposited massive, high-purity fluorite veins, often found in association with sulfide minerals like galena, sphalerite, and pyrite at iconic localities like the Xianghuapu, Shangbao, and Dongpo mines. While small-scale artisanal quarrying and lead-zinc mining date back centuries, large-scale, dedicated extraction of industrial-grade fluorite for metallurgical and chemical uses expanded rapidly in the mid-twentieth century. Modernized corporate mining and advanced underground extraction operations have grown continuously, keeping Hunan one of the world's leading suppliers of both industrial fluorite and top-tier mineral specimens well into the 2020s.
