This gem comes from the collection of Michael "Scotty" Scott (1945-2025), an American entrepreneur who was the first CEO of Apple Computer from February 1977 to March 1981. We are honored to release a small selection of specimens and gems from the estate of our friend and customer. RARE & SUPERB, this exceptional, large small-cabinet piece is from the 1980s discovery of "Blue Quartz" at Tantara, with inclusions of copper minerals. The centerpiece is a sharp, 5.5 x 5.5 cm Quartz crystal. Throughout the crystal, and most notably in the large termination, are cornflower-blue puffs of botryoidal Shattuckite that are shocking in their detail, and easily seen through the front face of the crystal (which is slightly polished to show the strong inclusion, as most such pieces need to be). The colors and radial growth patterns show up well, even through the other sides. Gazing at it with admiration, you cannot deny how much this piece looks like the famous Hubble photograph "Pillars of Creation." It is literally a garden of blue stars, within the quartz. It is the best of its kind that we have seen; and comes from a legendary old discovery. This is a truly exceptional piece, and I think I will let the photos do the rest of the talking. Ex. Mike Scott collection. After his retirement from Apple, he became more and more engaged with gemstones (and minerals), building a collection for exhibiting and teaching the public about where gemstones come from. The interaction of natural art and sources with human eyes and carving skills fascinated Mike, and so this exhibition was geared to show the public that gems really do come from nature, by putting them in proximity to one another within the exhibitions. Portions of his collection was eventually showcased in exhibits such as at the Bowers Museum (L.A. area, running nearly 20 years); and in a huge and heavily promoted exhibition in Shanghai in 2005-6 (Light and Stone: Highlights from the Michael Scott Collection). This catalog of the exhibition is available on Amazon today. This piece was in his miscellaneous private holdings, and not part of his various museum exhibitions or loans, when it came out of the estate in a small deaccession lot.
