Azurite might be the most well-known secondary copper mineral in the world, and the old type locality for the species is the famed Chessy Copper Mines in France, where it was called "chessylite" for a time (it was officially changed to Azurite in 1824!). Iconic and showy, Chessy Azurites are typically are found as smaller specimens in the thumbnail to miniature range. Larger specimens are generally only found coming out of museum collections that have been dispersed over the centuries. This piece, however, is incredibly impressive and large, worthy of a museum. The previous owner bought it out of an old collection liquidation at a Tucson show long ago (1960s-70s, we believe he had indicated). Most are single clusters, of some size: this, however, is a double, conjoined cluster composed of blocky violet-blue crystals up to 1.8 cm. This remains an important and historic display specimen approaching cabinet sized at slightly over 9 cm. It can be displayed horizontally to great effect, or mounted up vertically to show off its floater nature (complete all around).This is CLASSIC, OLD-TIME material from mines that were closed by the end of the 19th century. Ex. Bob Werner collection (in my opinion, his best specimen when we purchased that collection in 2025).
