A robust, yet bizarrely HIGHLY unusual stalk of two generations of quartz crystals growing together, like onions with layers to be "peeled back." This specimen in particular displays the ‘trunk’ of the quartz crystal that is then met with an overgrowth of a second generation. What makes this specimen so unique and scientifically unusual, a mineral oddity quite frankly, is that the quartz was etched in the pocket due to corrosive solutions running through the pocket in which they formed. Etching is typically messy and destructive; the etching here, though, was somehow selective, etching the second overgrowth of quartz whilst following the epitaxial growth plane of the first generation, thus hollowing out the insides of the ‘cap’. This piece displays an alabaster white color with some of the crystal faces looking jagged, and others looking almost smooth. The luster is somewhere between matte and vitreous, and each prism face has horizontal striations on the prism faces perpendicular to its length. This piece also lights up red under SW fluorescence, a neat little addition on top of everything else. A unique quartz specimen that would make a great addition to any quartz suite.
