This specimen is a masterclass in geological storytelling, packing a hidden surprise and a rare double-etching growth event. in quartz At first glance, the front face showcases a striking, jagged cluster of alabaster-white quartz crystals, but rotate the piece around and you are met with a hidden, prominent cluster of sandy-colored calcite rhombs tucked completely onto the back. What makes this piece more interesting for a collection is the evidence of two entirely separate etching events. The first etching was highly aggressive, meticulously etching the two generations of quartz crystals and hollowing out the interior caps of the quartz into little skeletal ‘star’ formations along the epitaxial growth plane of the first generation of quartz. Then, a smaller, much milder second wave of acidic solutions swept through the pocket. This second event lightly etched the later-generation calcite rhombs. Because it wasn't nearly as corrosive as the first, it didn't demolish them, leaving behind beautifully textured, slightly frosted faces that still retain their distinct rhombohedral shapes. When you turn on the UV lights, the dual-generation calcite puts on a signature show, igniting an electric red under shortwave UV and a rich honey-yellow under longwave UV. It’s an incredibly dynamic, double-etched oddball that offers a unique twist for any quartz fanatic or fluorescence lover. From a one-time find in April of 2026, very few specimens were associated with calcite and these are even in China at a high premium compared to loose crystals and clusters.
