Clustered small tabular Baryte crystals with orange-red inclusions line an extensive cavity formed within a layer of Baryte matrix from the Lavrion District mines in Attikí Prefecture, Greece. There is damage to two areas on the display surface, where the Baryte crystals have been contacted, but richly crystallized specimens of red Baryte such as this are an important classic from the Lavrion District and are hard to come by. The red colour comes from a thin band of inclusions near the outer edge of the crystals and is usually stated to be from iron oxide inclusions. The main band of Baryte matrix is opaque white, with the tabular crystals being translucent and cream to reddish in colour. Individual crystals reach about 8 mm across in their longest direction. Similar specimens are often labelled as from the Paliokamariza mines, but this one was simply recorded as from "Laurien".
