Always extremely desirable, Emerald - the green variety of Beryl - holds a special fascination with collectors in part due to its rarity in good crystals, and also its unusual and attractive colour. Colombia is the undisputed premier source country for fine gem Emeralds. Muzo Municipality in Boyacá Department is one of the most famous historic regions for mining of Emerald with many individual mines. At 2.1 cm in length, the prismatic crystal displayed on this miniature specimen shows good colour and is quite glassy, but is fractured in a couple of places and is not terminated, but is still a really good, visible (for display) size and is on matrix. The matrix is predominantly carbonates - brown Siderite and white Calcite - but with a little greyish host rock too (dark organic-rich shale). Compare this to a perfect gem crystal on matrix and the difference in price is extraordinary, making this a very good proposition for a 'starter' Emerald.
