Hibonite is a rare calcium-aluminum oxide and this is an excellent example of the species from Madagascar, displayed wonderfully on a well trimmed matrix. Matrix specimens are extremely rare, especially as most of these came out before the 1960s and at the time, were field collected simply for the geometric crystal shapes. Moreover, this is lustrous, when most are simply dull. Although the formula seems simple, the calcium can be replaced by minor amounts of cerium, and aluminum by minor titanium and magnesium; thus leading to a complex chemistry. This unusually lustrous, hexagonal, dark gray-black crystal is textbook for the species but unusual in its vertical display on a contrasting matrix: a veritable beauty queen for this species. This superb, 3-cm crystal is a major example of the species and has a three-dimensional parallel-growth habit. These robust crystals are very rare! Ex. Phil Oswalt collection (it remained with Phil Oswalt for decades, and his rare species suite was sold intact and privately, when his main collection went to Heritage Auctions around 2012).
