A very important, rich lavender-to-purple-colored crystal of Tremolite (var. Hexagonite) from the classic locality at the Gouverneur Mine at Fowler, New York. This is hugely significant for the size and quality of this normally micaceous species which tends to form as rock masses, not as huge dominant crystals; and is therefore not only important for the species but important for the USA as this is the best-of-species locale. Hexagonite is the manganoan variety of Tremolite and is very rare in this quality and size at just over four inches! Tremolite is in the Amphibole Group, however, rarely do we see many of the rock-forming minerals in single crystals that are this attractive and colorful. This large crystal is translucent for the bottom third and then the upper portion has many gemmy areas and displays a vibrant lavender color. The crystal is mostly complete, which is very good for these since they are essentially "frozen" in the rock they are found in. The bottom has a rough termination and the top has a better, more tapered termination. It is essentially diamond-shaped in cross-section as are most Amphiboles. An excellent example for the species! Ex. Bill and Anne Cook collection.
