The specimen comes with several previous antique labels as shown at the end of the video. The Maggia Valley, located in the Canton of Ticino (Tessin), Switzerland, is a celebrated Alpine-cleft locality known for its exceptional metamorphic mineralogy. Geologically, the region is composed of high-grade metamorphic rocks, primarily gneisses and schists of the Penninic nappes, which were subjected to intense pressure and temperature during the Alpine orogeny. Within the characteristic open fissures or "clefts" of these rocks, titanite (also known as sphene) crystallized from late-stage hydrothermal fluids. The titanite from Maggia is highly prized by collectors for its distinctive "twin" formations and its vibrant colors, which range from a brilliant lime-green to a deep honey-yellow or brownish-green. These crystals are typically transparent to translucent with an adamantine luster and often exhibit a flattened, wedge-shaped or "envelope" habit. Historically, the area has been explored for centuries by "strahlers" (local crystal hunters) who navigate the steep, rugged terrain to find these geological treasures. Today, specimens from Maggia remain iconic representations of Swiss Alpine mineralogy, valued for both their aesthetic beauty and their role in understanding the metamorphic history of the Central Alps.
